Finnsheep are medium sized, gregarious, and multi-purposed sheep. They are very milky - usually able to raise 3-4 lambs on their own - and wonderful mothers with strong primitive instincts for nurturing,  protecting, even babysitting other ewes' lambs.  Known for their prolificacy, they tend to lamb in litters. The shepherd should be mindful of the ewe and her lambs' needs with so many demands.  Lambs are adept at making do, being equal opportunity udder finders. With larger litters, supplementing and careful watching is necessary. However, mothers should perform and produce lambs that, though born small, will make sizable gains within their first few months of life. To note, Finn lambing numbers are why these sheep were brought into the US from Finland. Commercial lambing percentages here needed a boost, and this breed is commonly crossed in to increase those numbers today.  Without competition, lambing season is our favorite!
Finnsheep are well-known for their calm demeanors, friendliness, and ease of handling while maintaining valuable primitive traits. Certainly this accounts for much of their popularity! Their wool tends towards the fine side of medium and is an absolute dream to spin - very next-to-skin soft without the heavy pilling of a finer wool. Finn fleece carries a slight bloom and drape when knit and often a lovely sheen. Colors are generally highly valued and sought by the hobby farmer or for the spinner's flock, though equally appealing white Finnsheep are sought for many commercial settings. Though we certainly enjoy the Finnsheep rainbow, we focus first on hardiness, structure, sound udders, fleece quality, growth, and numbers. Low-lanolin fleeces with high sheen not prone to prematurely felting and ideal temperaments are also preferred. We encourage our flock to grow to marketable weights, as we look at the farm from a practical and sustainable standpoint. Our Finnsheep are lovely to work with, as are most Finns, and we do raise and sell both white and colored breeding stock.
