Kerry Cows
Originally from Ireland, Kerry Cows have been around for thousands of years. They are supremely efficient milkers on a grass-based system. In Ireland, these cows often lived on scrub land that would have starved another breed of cattle. Nearly always black, these cows yield a high-butterfat milk and are known for their very friendly and trainable dispositions. With commercial diary monopolizing the milk industry, Kerry cows were nearly extinguished. Currently, this ancient breed is regaining popularity among small farms, especially considering their cost effectiveness, easy temperament and health, efficient grass-utilization genetics, manageable size, small fat globules in the milk (unusually easy to digest - like goat's milk), and longevity (even successful calving recorded at 30 years of age!) Kerry cows have lived up to the hype here and earned their keep on our farm. We have milked them, made yogurt and cheese and butter and ice-cream from their milk, trained them as oxen, and have occasionally taken a gentle ride. Please contact us to be added to the list or to discuss questions and availability.
CLRC registered and disease tested stock.
