Old Time Scotch Collies (OTSC) were originally a broad group of working dog bred for practicality and companionship on the customary homestead. Though they often lived in family settings, these dogs were known for their ability to understand the needs of the farm and shepherd without micromanagement or excessive instruction. With some basic training and their very special intuition in play, the OTSC excelled in driving and gathering, protecting stock and property, and devotedly shadowing their beloved families (particularly children). These family dogs tended to be reserved with strangers. One of the very special things about this working breed is their ability to not work - referred to as an "off switch" - when there is no work to be done. These dogs molded very easily into watchful shepherds who were content to lay on the hearth or by their master's feet until it was time for chores or something caused them to alert. A versatile dog, they were bred for varmint control of the homestead, scent work, retrieving, fence and property line keepers, and often performing feats showcasing their amazing intelligence and problem-solving skills. They often communicated in surprising ways when something was amiss or not quite right. The OTSC loyalty and devotion is well-documented, many finding their way home if lost over enormous distances. Several herding dog breeds came out of this traditional Farm Shepherd, such as the Rough Collie (now mostly bred for show), but originally, these Farm Shepherds were a landrace breed. The OTSC has changed names multiple times and has a diversity of type, as farmers of the past attempted to match their best suited bitches and sires to continue to enhance these remarkable skills.
Today we strive to continue this practice: Matching the most intuitive working farm shepherds with a high desire to please, genetic and structural soundness, gentleness with grit when necessary, a solid "off-switch," and family companions with the ability to work and excel in a variety of activities. Fully capable homestead managers who are suited first to be simply wonderful family guardians... And we have the dogs and stories to back us up!
The ideal and traditional farm and family shepherd. We mention our collies briefly here who are part of Shepherd's Hearth here, but have a separate website for more complete information on our shared kennel.
Our first farm dog, Benji (retired) (our natural bob tail male,) encompasses all of the things mentioned above. We can never say enough about his gifts and talents. Full of grit, he has saved us MANY hours of work and has saved our stock from predation innumerable times. Benji is a complete tri-color shadow and prefers to be right next us as much as he is able. He is a family dog who guards and has herded cows, llamas, pigs, goats, sheep, and poultry. Kittens have even been rescued from hawks by him. Reliable Benji is often called upon by the neighbors for helping with rogue stock or odd jobs. He is the reason that our kennel Shepherd's Hearth started and is foundational to our program.
Lorna came to us next, and she has certainly proven her worth! She is often reserved with strangers at first, but warms up with time. She is exceedingly loving and maternal. She regularly counts our family members and is often the first to notice something amiss. Tri-color Lorna has a long out-run and easy prey drive with good obedience and a reliable off-switch. She loves to fetch and play with sticks and shadows the family through walks in the woods with no need of a lead. Lorna catches chickens carefully and helps to maneuver both sheep and cows. This is "The Incredible Journey" dog as she proven herself to be. She is very gentle and eager to please. A great all around farm dog and companion!
Tansy (retired) is our sable female. She is steadfast and above all things a nanny at heart. She has proved herself to be very steady, a deep thinker, and aids in the care of all babies regardless of species. She demonstrates wonderful herding abilities and a great amount of control even at a young age. A very loving dog with grit to back her up. She is eager to meet anyone and not reserved. She will investigate other dogs carefully to see how they fit in. Tansy is certainly a good manager and wants all things in order. She has special ways of communicating and is often "aroo-ing" in the sweetest ways. A very kind friend to everyone, but wise enough to note when something is amiss.
Peach is owned by Kendy Sawyer and resides at Hinesite Farm near us also in SW VA. (Kendy Sawyer is co-owner of Shepherd's Hearth.) Peach lives on a cattle farm and helps with rodent elimination and walks the fields with Kendy helping to keep gates and move cattle on occasion. She is a very steady and polite and sweet dog who is friendly to all and is a shaded sable. Peach loves children and is very loyal to her master. She is incredibly smart and very athletic.
A true all around farm and family dog!
Our dogs are tested for genetic diseases and PennHIP tested as well (results visible on pedigrees below).
