The Old Time Scotch Collie is a landrace breed developed from those farmers requiring an easy to live with well-rounded farm dog, who could relax when off duty but could reliably get the job done with little training to acquire a new skill. These Farm Shepherds are multi-talented, known for tracking, guarding, protecting, companionship, herding, and unbelievable intuition, almost training themselves with the right relationship and input. There is not much that this good Farm Shepherd cannot do, but one of his dearest qualities is that, though his work drive is quite willing and strong, his desire to please his master wins. These dogs are known shadowers to their masters and always watchful, but they are peaceful when all is quiet. When they are not working, they are often faithfully laying at their master's feet. These shepherds love children and quickly learn new games, being very tolerant and gentle with their charges. Their look is rather diverse, as this Collie is bred not to specific type, but for their marvelous temperaments, intuition as a working and useful companion animals, and sound bodys. As a good working dog should have, Old Time Scotch Collies have manageable coats that shed dirt and debris without an excessive undercoat. The Old Time Scotch Collie is a Landrace breed brought back from the shepherds and farmers of old. They are supremely gentle with devoted fierceness when called upon. Great for both farm and family, they are most beloved in both working and companionable pet homes. We mention our WoodSong Farm collies here, but have a separate website for more complete information on our shared Shepherd's Hearth kennel if you are interested.
Our first farm dog, Benji, encompasses all of the things mentioned above. We can never say enough about his gifts and talents. Full of grit, he has saved us MANY hours of work and has saved our stock from predation innumerable times. Benji is a complete tri-color shadow and prefers to be right next us as much as he is able. He is a family dog who guards and has herded cows, llamas, pigs, goats, sheep, and poultry. Kittens have even been rescued from hawks by him. Reliable Benji is often called upon by the neighbors for helping with rogue stock or odd jobs. He is the reason that our kennel Shepherd's Hearth started and is foundational to our program.
Lorna came to us next, and she has certainly found her nitch! Though she is very reserved with strangers, she is exceedingly loving and maternal. She regularly counts our family members and is often the first to notice something amiss. Tri-color Lorna has a long out-run and easy prey drive with good obedience and a reliable off-switch. She loves to fetch and play with sticks and shadows the family through walks in the woods with no need of a lead. Lorna catches chickens carefully and helps to maneuver both sheep and cows. She is very gentle and eager to please. A great all around farm dog and companion!
Tansy is our sable female pup. She is growing and being considered for our program pending all evaluations and testing. So far she is proving herself to be very steady, a deep thinker, and above all an absolute nanny to all children. She already demonstrates wonderful herding abilities and a great amount of control at a young age. A very loving dog.
Winter came to us a bit later in life through no fault of her own or her original family. She has been well-loved by two families now and babysits the kids for chores and escorts escapee chickens back to their places in a gentle way. She is Lorna's full sister and a certain sky watcher. "Winnie" is a gorgeous merle color and a very friendly dog who welcomes everyone. She is a snuggler and glutton for pets as long as there are no rogue varmints about!
Our dogs are Embark tested for genetic diseases and PENN hip tested as well (results visible on pedigrees below).
